Significance of Margazhi / Dhanur Month

• Firstly, the month of Margazhi is Morning time for the Devas, who pray to Sriman Narayana in this time (One day for Devas is One year for us).
  
  
• Sri Andal sung the 30 paasurams of Thirupaavai to attain Sriman Narayan during these 30 days and finally attained Sriman Narayana Himself.
  
  
• Lord Krishna Himself said in Gita, “Among the months, I am Margazhi“.
  
  
• The Pagal Pathu & Raa Pathu utsavams, when the Thiruvaimozhi Pasurams are recited, happen in all Divyadesams during this month only. Srirangam Pagal Pathu & Raa pathu Utsavams are very famous.
  
  
• Vaikunta Ekadashi also occurs in this Auspicious month.

மார்கழி திங்கள் மதி நிறைந்த நன்னாளால்
நீராட போதுவீர் போதுமினோ நேரிழையீர்
சீர் மல்கும் ஆயர்ப்படி  செல்வ சிறுமீர்காள்
கூர்வேல் கொடுந்தொழிலன் நந்தகோபன் குமரன்
ஏரார்ந்த கண்ணி யசோதை இளம் சிங்கம்
கார் மேனி செங்கண் கதிர் மதியம் போல் முகத்தான்
நாராயணனே நமக்கே பறை தருவான்
பாரோர் புகழ படிந்தேலோர் எம்பாவாய்..

Maargazhi thingaL madhi niRaindha nannaaLaal

neeraada pOdhuveer pOdhuminO nErizhaiyeer

seer malgum aayppaadi chelva chiRumeergaaL

koorvEl kodundhozhilan nandhagOpan kumaran

Eraarndha kaNNi yasOdhai iLam singam

kaar mEni cengaN kadhir madhiyam pOl mugaththaan

naaraayaNanE namakkE paRai tharuvaan

paarOr pugazha padindhElOr empaavaay

MEANING 

The full moon day of Margazhi is here
What an auspicious day it is!

O dear ornamented girls
who thrive in Brindavana, overflowing with prosperity

Come along, let us go bathe,
Come along if you so desire.

Narayana --
The son of Nandagopa,
whose sharp spear is readily so cruel --
The young lion of Yashoda,
whose eyes are so full of love --
With dark body
red eyes face like the sun and moon

Narayana alone
will give us
The drum!

So join us, so that the people
Of the world will celebrate.
