Tamil Nadu's New Secretriat building

Chennai is all decked up for the inauguration of the Rs 425 crore Assembly complex with modern facilities tomorrow, with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi scheduled to fly down to this metropolis, for what is expected to be a grand event.

Singh and Gandhi are scheduled to arrive here by a special flight for the programme and return the same day

According to sources, they will reach Chennai by a special flight at 4.30 pm on Saturday. They are expected to be accompanied by Union Ministers Veerappa Moily, Gulam Nabi Azad and G K Vasan.

Apart from those at power in the Centre, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Rosaiyyah, Puducherry Chief Minister V Vaithilingam and Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa  have been invited, as also scores of Union Ministers and party leaders, including from the BJP and CPI(M).

The Governor of the state Surjit Singh Barnala is also scheduled to address the inauguration. The inauguration function will be held on Saturday evening.

The Tamil Nadu assembly was being held at the Fort St. George complex for the last 53 years. The State Budget session will be held at the new Assembly complex on March 19. The new complex of which only the Assembly building is ready as of now, is a unique architectural creation. The new secretariat building in Chennai is a unique green architectural building which will be inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by planting a sapling before the inauguration, according to sources. The function will continue for one hour according to the present time schedule and is likely to get over around 6 PM. The guests will be welcomed by the Assembly Speaker R. Avudaiappan and Chief Secretary K.S Sripathi is scheduled to address the vote of thanks.


The huge complex at Omandurar Government estate is a pet project of DMK president and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who has been visiting the latest landmark of Chennai on almost on a daily basis to review its progress.


With preparations in full swing for the event, a Special Protection Group (SPG) team arrived here on Wednesday to interact with the city police on security measures for the high-profile event.

At a press meet, City Police Commissioner T Rajendran said the security plan for the event would be implemented in four phases.

Also, passes of four different colours - red, yellow, blue and light red - would be issued to guests, media and police personnel for entry into the venue. Earlier, a high-level official meeting was held at the new Secretariat complex.
